Self-portrait in a Russian hat, oil on canvas, July 2011

ME

I paint people in their own environment because that is part of who they are. These examples, selected by my granddaughter Jaz Steel, who is studying fine art at university, are mostly based on this premise.

Painting a portrait on this basis takes a bit of organising and, often is not convenient to the sitter. Nor to me. But that's my chosen way of getting the picture to tell more.
